BLA-BLA

‘comedy review as extreme sport!’

In 2002, I formed a small theatre ensemble consisting of three actors and three musicians who were willing to throw themselves into a form of topical, satirical sketch show that was in equal parts hazardous and hilarious. During a spring and autumn season from 2002 to 2006 the people of Fredrikstad flocked to experience the BLA-BLA ensemble’s take on the month’s, the week’s, even the day’s news. With a new show on the first Friday of every month, this was theatre as extreme sport, the sketches and songs being written and rehearsed in three days before the performance.

The title of the show is a play on the Norwegian word for newspaper, bla’ – Fredrikstad being a 2-newspaper city, one on the right, one on the left of local and national politics.

The centre-piece of the show was a light-footed, on-stage interview by one of the newspapers’ editors of a personality of current interest. During the interview a newspaper cartoonist sketched the guest and the drawing was awarded to a member of the audience.
